About

SCRIPTed is an international, interdisciplinary, open-access journal publishing scholarship on the relationships between law, technology, and society. Associated with the SCRIPT Centre at the University of Edinburgh Law School, the journal provides a forum for research on the legal, social, ethical, and regulatory dimensions of technological change.

Since 2004, SCRIPTed has published contributions from academics, practitioners, policymakers, and researchers from around the world. The journal is managed by postgraduate researchers and supported by a team of LLM student Assistant Editors, reflecting its commitment to fostering the next generation of scholars in law and technology.

All content is published under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)  licence, unless otherwise stated. There are no fees to access or publish in the journal.

 


Aims and scope

SCRIPTed is an open-access, online, international, and interdisciplinary journal dedicated to exploring the dynamic relationships between law, policy, society, ethics, technology, and innovation in their broadest sense.

The journal's scope is intentionally broad and inclusive. We welcome high-quality legal and interdisciplinary scholarship addressing the challenges and opportunities arising from technological and scientific developments, as well as their wider social, economic, ethical, and regulatory implications.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Intellectual property law and policy
  • Privacy, data protection, and information governance
  • Artificial intelligence and automated decision-making
  • Digital technologies, software, platforms, and online environments
  • Media, communications, and internet regulation
  • Biotechnology, genomics, reproductive technologies, and health innovation
  • Medical law, bioethics, and public health
  • Innovation governance and technology regulation
  • National, regional, and international policy responses to technological change

SCRIPTed encourages submissions from a wide range of academic disciplines, including law, sociology, philosophy, computer science, economics, political science, science and technology studies, and related fields.

Governance and ownership

SCRIPTed is managed by the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor, working with a team of Assistant Editors. The journal operates under the oversight of a Supervisory Board composed of members of the SCRIPT Centre at the University of Edinburgh Law School.
 
Copyright to papers published within the journal issues are owned by their respective authors under Creative Commons licenses.
The journal is published by the University of Edinburgh – a charitable body.
Edinburgh Diamond – a service based within the University of Edinburgh Library – acts as the Publishing Partner by providing publishing services.

Publication frequency

SCRIPTed publishes at least two issues per year (usually June and December). The SCRIPTed team also welcomes proposals for special issues.
