Author Guidelines

Please submit a short proposal of your article. This issue's theme is Borders and Belonging. You can choose any topic that relates directly or indirectly to the theme - the theme is not meant to be restrictive. Rather, it is chosen to encourage you to think in a direction that will allow us to produce a thought-provoking narrative. As such, submissions should be focused on providing original analysis, opinion, or academic examination while furthering political discourse on campus. The ideal Leviathan article strikes a balance. It can provide a reference for academic debates, but also engages and informs general-interest readers.

Make sure to be clear and outline what you want to write about. There is no standard format for the writing proposal, so don't worry about its structure too much. That said, we do ask that each proposal:

  • Includes your name, contact details, year of study and course at the top of the document.
  • Has a working title.
  • Is between 300 and 600 words.
  • Contains a short list of proposed sources/references.
  • Is in a Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format with the title ‘SURNAME_BORDERSANDBELONGING_PROPOSAL’.

In formulating your proposal, it might be helpful to to consider your answers to these questions:

1. What do you want to show with your article? What is your thesis/ underlying message?

2. What arguments do you want to make in order to prove your point? How do you want to structure your essay?

3. What sources are you planning to use in your work?

We want to know as much as possible about your article in order to make sure that you receive adequate help from our skilled and friendly Regional Editors. You can also read our submissions guide to learn more about how to write a proposal and our writing guide to learn more about our standards, procedures and requirements.

If you wish to submit a piece that is already written i.e., an essay for a course you might have taken and want to rework, your submission should:

  • Be no more than 2500 words.
  • Include your name, contact details, year of study and course at the top of the document.
  • Contain original references and bibliography.
  • Be in a Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format with the title ‘SURNAME_BORDERSANDBELONGING_SUBMISSION’.

As you will see, the submission form allows you to attach a document. You can attach a draft of your article, if you already have started writing, or the full article if it is previous work that is being submitted. Do not attach anything else.

If you have any questions or problems with submitting, feel free to contact us at leviathanjournal@gmail.com. We will be more than happy to address your queries.
