This editorial for HIMALAYA Volume 45, Issue 1, opens from a May 2026 symposium in Tromsø on caste, indigeneity, and ecological futures, and from the Cockroach Janta Party that emerged in India days later after the Chief Justice was reported to have called unemployed young people "cockroaches" and "parasites of society." Read alongside the movements in Bangladesh (2024) and Nepal (2025), it asks who is counted as productive and who as a burden, and introduces the issue's contributions on Everest expedition laborers, road workers in Ladakh, population churn and educational migration in highland Nepal, Angami pottery, and the Mary Mother of God Church in Kalimpong, together with five book reviews.
