  • EAR39 - CALL FOR PAPERS: 'Beyond the Visible'

    18-Apr-2024

EAR39 invites contributions that go beyond the visible, exploring architecture as an open-ended process rather than a tangible outcome. We look for perspectives that transcend the traditional role of the architect as the master builder, embracing a multiplicity of actors and viewpoints, and approaching architecture from below (Sérgio Ferro 2024). The previous issue, ‘Beyond Human,’ questioned anthropocentric views of the built environment. This upcoming issue, ‘Beyond the Visible,’ builds on that premise, seeking to explore and challenge the borders of our discipline. This is a call to approach the built environment as a repository of hidden memories and stories that, once revealed, will provide a richer understanding of our built heritage, contemporary architecture, and everything in between.

  • EAR 38 Navigating Boundaries No1 and No2 publication.

    29-Feb-2024

We are happy to announce the publication of volume 38 Navigating Boundaries: Architectures beyond Human in two parts!

EAR38: Navigating boundaries: Architectures beyond human No. 1 compiles contributions which revolve around a transformative exploration of the relationship between the built environment and the plant life of our surroundings. It also gathers research centred on the transformative aspects of artistic practices within the built environment, redefining the relationship between art, space and perception.

EAR38: Navigating boundaries: Architectures beyond human No. 2 delves deeply into the virtual environment, exploring its impact on spatial perception and construction. The contributions within this issue examine how technological advancements are used to create both physical and virtual spaces, as well as the behaviours demonstrated by both humans and non-humans within these immaterial environments.

We invite you to read them here:

  • CALL FOR PAPERS - Navigating boundaries: architectures beyond human (closed)

    01-Apr-2023

We are now accepting proposals that tackle the dominance of anthropocentric approaches to architecture. These may include investigations into the position of humans within the environment, more-than-human architectures and posthuman studies. We welcome and encourage inter/multi/transdisciplinary approaches with links to spatial practice/architecture where these issues are addressed.

With the climbing environmental concerns and the pandemic, the dominant role of humans on the planet has been brought into glaring focus. Investigations include exploration of human influence on ecosystems through the lens of “The Anthropocene. Another area of exploration about the conception of the human concerns the blurring distinction between the human and the artificial through technological advancements that has been a matter of posthumanism studies. Following from our last issue, EAR37: Moving onwards: Methodological exploration - wherein we brought together novel approaches that examined various interactions between the past and the future, the digital and the physical - we now intend to probe ecologies beyond human, and ask for contributions that tackle, investigate or shift the place of humanity in the built environment to envision alternative futures anchored in contemporary issues.
