Abstract

The following article was originally conceived and presented as a contribution to the "Avant-garde Now?! Fourth Ghent Conference on Literary Theory" at the University of Ghent on March 17, 2005, which addressed the supposed "death of the avant-garde" in art and literary theory.

Hubert can den Berg is a Researcher at the Institute for Humanities Research and Department of Dutch Language and Literature at the University of Groningen. His research interests include social-political and other contextual aspects of literature and art; and European avant-garde and modernism.
