FORUM is Recruiting!
We are looking for a Deputy Editor, a Workshop Coordinator and Assistant Editors (Content Editors and Copy Editors) to join our editorial team for the journal’s 38th issue. The roles are open to anyone enrolled in a PhD or Master’s programme (Taught or Research) at the University of Edinburgh during the academic year 2026–27. No previous editorial experience is needed: full training and support will be provided.
Joining FORUM is a great way to learn how academic publishing works, practice giving constructive feedback, and sharpen your own writing along the way.
Deputy Editor
The Deputy Editor will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief throughout 2026–27 on:
- setting the theme of Issue 38 and drafting the call for papers (December 2026)
- desk review and peer review coordination (May to July 2027)
- the issue introduction (August 2027)
- final checks (September 2027)
The Deputy Editor will have the opportunity to take over as Editor-in-Chief in 2027–28, so applicants who expect to remain at the University for a further year are especially welcome. The work can be done remotely.
Workshop Coordinator
The Workshop Coordinator will lead the training side of the journal: planning and running editing workshops for our Peer Reviewers and Copy Editors (April to May 2027) and preparing simple guidance materials to support them.
The Workshop Coordinator will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief throughout 2026–27 on:
- planning and running editing workshops for our assistant editors (April to May 2027)
- desk review and peer review coordination (May to July 2027)
- final checks (September 2027)
This is a one-year role running until September 2027, and the workshops will take place in person in Edinburgh.
Assistant Editors
Assistant Editors are at the heart of how FORUM gets published. You can apply for one or both of the following:
Content Editors (July 2027)
Content Editors will each work with the authors of two accepted articles, giving feedback on argument, structure and clarity to help strengthen the work before copy editing.
Copy Editors (August 2027)
Copy Editors will each work on two accepted articles, revising and formatting them in line with the FORUM Style Guide so they are ready for publication.
What we’re looking for
We don’t expect anyone to tick every box. We’d love to hear from you if you have some of the following:
- An eye for detail and an interest in editing or proofreading
- Good written communication skills
- Availability during the relevant period for your role
- For the Deputy Editor: interest in shaping the theme of Issue 38, prompt and reliable communication with the Editor-in-Chief, and willingness to learn the journal’s platform (OJS), with training provided
- For the Workshop Coordinator: enthusiasm for teamwork and coordinating people and events, confidence in explaining ideas to others, and an interest in teaching, mentoring or running sessions on editing.
- Familiarity with FORUM is a bonus, but not required
How to apply
