Section Policies
Research Articles
We invite substantial studies of topics covered by the journal's remit. Submissions which range across the borders of the countries of East and Central Asia (both historically and in the present) and those which avail themselves of multi-media technology in an innovative manner, are particularly welcome. Articles will normally be in the range of 10,000 to 15,000 words. If you expect that your study will fall outside these limits, please contact the editors before submitting.

Emerging Scholars
The purpose of this section is to provide a forum for emerging scholars to present their work (typically but not necessarily work from a recent doctoral thesis) in a manner which is more formal and permanent than short reviews or postings to e-mail distribution lists. Items will normally be in the region of 3,000 to 5,000 words.

Reports and Reactions
This section is intended to include review articles, reports and responses to current issues in scholarship, as extended essays which address an issue or complex of issues pertinent to the journal's core focus. In the case of review articles, whilst submissions may focus on one work, it is expected that authors will write with extensive and intensive reference to other relevant studies in the field. We do not envisage publishing reviews that are brief synopses that address critical issues incidentally. Similarly, reports of gatherings such as workshops are expected to be useful discourses in their own right, rather than simple reports of papers read at a conference, for example. The normal length for items in this section is 3,000 to 5,000 words.

Peer Review Process
This journal is fully peer-reviewed: we will normally seek the opinions of two scholars in relevant fields, who will be asked to give an initial response within one month of receipt of the author's draft submission. A detailed response will normally be expected within three months.
Publication Frequency
The e-Journal of East and Central Asian Religions will in future be publishing items as they become available.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
This journal’s open access policy is in line with UK research funders’ policies.
Authors are not charged any APCs (Article Processing Charges) or other publication fees.

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:
a. Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence.

b. d. Authors are required to make sure submitted content does not infringe third-party copyright. Authors must obtain permission to reproduce any third-party material for online – and print, if applicable – publication in perpetuity. It is also the authors’ responsibility to include any acknowledgements requested by copyright holders, and to mark clearly third-party material used with permission, material that has separate licensing terms, and material used under exceptions or limitations to copyright.

Permissions
It is not necessary to obtain permission to reuse articles published in this journal, provided that reuse is in line with the article’s Creative Commons licence and attribution to the author(s) and the published article is maintained. Please note that these terms do not extend to any material that has separate licensing terms specified or any material that is identified as being the copyright of a third party. Permission to reproduce third-party material must be obtained directly from the copyright holders concerned.
Archiving
This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. More...

- Make an initial assessment of its validity

Journal History
Henrik H. Sørensen, Per K. Sørensen and Ian Astley, the members of the original Seminar for Buddhist Studies (Copenhagen and Aarhus, Denmark), founded Studies in Central and East Asian Religions in 1988. Ten volumes had been published when E. J. Brill of Leiden acquired the title in 1999. They published Volumes 11 and 12/13 (double issue) before the journal ceased publication in 2002. e-JECAR is a different publication, offered to the scholarly community under a Creative Commons licence, but in the same spirit as the original initiative and covering the same geographical and thematic ground.
